Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

Greetings and Happy New Year!

I hope you all have had a great break!  It was nice to relax and catch up with family and friends. I want to thank you all for your generous gifts — I was so moved by your thoughtful cards and notes.  I’m extremely grateful to be your director and an AHS Raider!

Please see the important items below…

All-State Auditions, Round Two

GMEA just announced this morning, because of the impending snow, accompanied by below freezing temperatures on Friday evening and Saturday morning, that All-State auditions have been POSTPONED until NEXT SATURDAY, January 14, 2017.

All audition times will remain the same. Please note that there will be no make up auditions for students that can’t attend next Saturday because it would compromise the integrity of the auditions.

See the list of audition times! (pdf)

LGPE – Large Group Performance Evaluation

The next 6 weeks will be intense with LGPE, so I hope you are ready for the ride. We all need to buckle down and set aside some serious time for home practice.  I understand how busy you are, but we must prioritize. We will be discussing how to set realistic practice goals and strategies to maximize your time. You may not think that you matter, but the group is only as strong as its weakest link.  Everyone matters and contributes to the orchestra as whole!  You all have a big responsibility.

LGPE will be hosted at Chattahoochee High School this year.  Please double check and clear your calendars for the following dates.

Tuesday, February 14: Philharmonia@ 1:30 PM; Chamber @ 3:30 PM

Thursday, February 16: Sinfonia @ 4:15 PM; Symphony @ 6:30 PM

Here’s to an amazing 2017, everyone!!

-Dr. Laux

Performance Assessment (PA) / Playing Tests

This year students will perform regularly for formative feedback and as part of their orchestra grade. To save class time and allow students ample time to prepare their very best work, students will utilize their own technology (Surface Pro, cell phone, or other tablet) to record their performance video and will upload it to the cloud where Dr. Laux can view the video and assess each student.

While maintaining an accurate record of practice is a poThis method of assessment provides many benefits to the students and the orchestra program as a whole:

  • Encourages student practice outside of class and provides a musical goal.
  • Encourages individual student accountability in learning their part.
  • Encourages students to practice until they can submit their very best work.
  • Allows Dr. Laux to better assess students.
  • Provides each student with a digital portfolio of their work over time.

Fulton County Youth Orchestra Needs Volunteers

FCYO auditions will be this Tuesday, August 23 and they have  a record number of students coming in for the auditions (over 70 at last count!).
In the past, a lot of AHS orchestra students would help with the FCYO rehearsals and auditions.  It is a good way for students to accumulate the volunteer hours.  They could REALLY use some students for these auditions to help with tuning, registration and crowd control since they have so many students auditioning.

They are looking for about 6 students who can stay from 4-7 PM to help this Tuesday, August 23.  Please use the sign-up genius form to volunteer. http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/4090F48A5A923A6FF2-fcyo

All-State Orchestra

Students planning to audition for All-State Orchestra should pre-register with Dr. Laux using this form by September 2, 2016.  The audition fee is $20.00.  Please make your check payable to AHSOA and submit by Sept. 2.

A list of All-State Audition materials can be found here.

All-State Orchestra weekend is March 3-4, 2017.
