Fantastic Fall Concert

STUDENTS: Wonderful first concert, orchestras!  I have been so pleased with your progress and was exceptionally proud of your performance last Thursday, particularly because it was so early in the school year.

We will continue to work on our technique and will begin sight-reading new music that will be performed on our Winter Concert, scheduled for Thursday, December 8.  This concert will feature all of the orchestras and special guest performers from Webb Bridge Middle School.

PARENTS: If you have any photos from the concert you would like to share, please send them to me or post online so that I may download them and include them in our orchestra memory book.

Also, thank your for your continued support. I know the beginning of the school year is hectic and expenses can add up, especially when you consider uniform payments, student performance fees, and instrument rental/maintenance.

I would also like to publicly thank our AHSO Booster board!  They have been extremely welcoming to me.  In addition, their organization and attention to detail in planning and executing events is unparalleled! The students and I are very appreciative of all of your work!

Orchestra Method Book

Today each student received a new orchestra technique book.  This book should be kept at home for practice and we will use our class set of books in class.  Philharmonia and Chamber Orchestras should continue to bring their Essential Elements books to class.

Replacing Strings

Students:  Are the strings on your instrument over a year old?  If so, they probably need to be replaced.

Dr. Laux recommends the following strings:

  • Violin:  D’Addario Kaplan Amo or D’Addario Zyex
  • Viola:  D’Addario Helicore or D’Addario Zyex
  • Cello:  D’Addario Helicore
  • Double Bass: D’Addario Helicore

Other brands/models may be used. Strings can sound quite different on different instruments.

Concert Uniforms

Tuxedos will be delivered to the school in the next few days.

Dresses have been delivered and we will be distributing them to any remaining students tomorrow.

Some students may need to have their dressed hemmed, so please be proactive in getting this taken care of. Please read below about ALTERATION/HEMMING of your dress.

One option for alterations is:
Mrs. Chung of Master Cleaners, on the corner of State Bridge and Kimball Bridge Rds, has offered a 20% discount off of hemming (normal price-$18). When you go to be measured, bring your dress and the shoes you will wear for the concert. She says that you can choose to have the hem shortened by cutting, then finishing (permanent) or, a semi-permanent hem which can be altered to be made longer at a future date (in case of growth).

It would be best to take the dress in as soon as is possible, so dresses are ready for the concert. Any other alterations needed would be an additional charge, they will let you know.

Another option is:

A Z Tailor Alterations
11765 Jones Bridge Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30005).
678-205-1910
Cost is $15-$16 for hemming
Please bring appropriate shoes. Turn around time is approximately 2 days.

Performance Assessment (PA) / Playing Tests

This year students will perform regularly for formative feedback and as part of their orchestra grade. Fulton County Youth Orchestra Needs Volunteers

FCYO auditions will be this Tuesday, August 23 and they have  a record number of students coming in for the auditions (over 70 at last count!).
In the past, a lot of AHS orchestra students would help with the FCYO rehearsals and auditions.  It is a good way for students to accumulate the volunteer hours.  They could REALLY use some students for these auditions to help with tuning, registration and crowd control since they have so many students auditioning.

They are looking for about 6 students who can stay from 4-7 PM to help this Tuesday, August 23.  Please use the sign-up genius form to volunteer. http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/4090F48A5A923A6FF2-fcyo

All-State Orchestra

Students planning to audition for All-State Orchestra should pre-register with Dr. Laux using this form by September 2, 2016.  The audition fee is $20.00.  Please make your check payable to AHSOA and submit by Sept. 2.

A list of All-State Audition materials can be found here.

All-State Orchestra weekend is March 3-4, 2017.

Mini-Camp Wrap Up and the New School Year

Dear Parents and Students,

What a successful Mini-Camp!  It was great getting to know the students and watching students also mix it up.  The games were fun and so was sight-reading!

I would like to thank the parents who helped with the food.  Everyone enjoyed the pizza on Wednesday. The warm cookies donated by Tiff’s Treats on Thursday were also a welcome surprise. (Please visit their website here!) Finally, the ice cream social provided my Ms. Johnson was a wonderful way to finish things off!

Special thanks to the student leadership team for their work in putting managing the stage, handling the music, and coordinating the games. It could not have happened without your help!

mini-camp_pano2016

For our first day of school tomorrow, please DO NOT bring your instruments.  We will be assigning lockers, discussing procedures, and going through the orchestra handbook. The handbook will be posted online shortly. We will start with instruments on Tuesday.

I’m so excited about this year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Laux

P.S. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snap Chat!

1. Cello players — PLEASE bring your personal instruments if you have one. Our school instruments will be limited.

See you all soon!!

Mini-Camp Reminder and RSVP

Hello orchestra students and parents,

This is just a reminder about the Alpharetta High School Orchestra Mini-Camp next week.  The camp will be held on Wednesday, August 3 and Thursday, August 4 from 6:00-9:00 PM in the AHS Auditorium and orchestra room.  This camp is a requirement for all orchestra members.

To clarify, there is no cost for the camp!  We will be serving pizza promptly at 6 PM on Wednesday and end with an ice cream social on Thursday evening.  (Students should plan on eating dinner prior to arrival on Thursday). The camp will be filled with food, fun, and music!

Students should wear comfortable clothes and come equipped with their instrument and bow.  A variety of games will be played so that all of the students can get to know each other (and also get to know their new director!). If students haven’t played their instruments in a while, not to worry — we will be taking time to make sure all instruments are in tune and in good playing order. In addition, we will be reading some new music and working on a few new techniques.

In order for us to plan and order the correct amount of food, please RSVP using this link no later than Sunday, July 31.  https://goo.gl/forms/smmKqVhHGHQ2t0zT2

If you are receiving the message in error, please respond to let me know.  Also, if you have any questions or concerns, I’m happy to help.  Please note my brand new FCS email address:

I’m looking forward to a great camp and an incredibly musical school year!

Welcome Letter for Students and Parents

Please see the attached letter that went out out to all current members and rising 9th graders today.

Pre-Summer Flyer 2016 (PDF)

Dear Orchestra Parents and Students,

I am extremely honored and excited to be the next orchestra director at Alpharetta High School!  It was great meeting some of you at the Spring Concert and at the middle schools. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you better and working with you to make some wonderful music next school year. I want to carry on Mr. Fisher’s incredible legacy and continue building the tradition of excellence that will help the AHS Orchestra propel forward.

You will soon learn that I am a extremely passionate teacher and that I care deeply for each of my students. I work hard to create learning experiences that are educational, motivational, and inspirational. My goal is to always help make you the best you can be as an independent musician, orchestral player, and as a person. We can all learn so much through music!

Please mark your calendars for our “Bach to School” Mini-Camp! It will be held Wednesday, August 3 & Thursday, August 4 – 6:00-9:00 P.M. in the AHS Orchestra room and auditorium. Please note: The mini-camp is a required event for all orchestra students but, trust me, you won’t want to miss it! The leadership team will be working this summer to make the mini-cam an educational and fun experience so we can all get to know each other socially and musically.

I hope you all have a relaxing summer (but don’t forget to practice!), and be sure to revisit the orchestra website regularly for updates. Also, please follow/subscribe to us on FacebookTwitterYouTube, and Instagram.  This way you’ll never miss out on all the important and fun information that will be coming your way!

In addition, the tentative orchestra calendar for 2016-2017 is now available online, so please mark the important dates and/or subscribe to the Google Calendar.  Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions.  I am looking forward to getting started!

Sincerely,

Dr. Laux
