AHSO Newsletter, 8-22-2016

I apologize for this long AHSO Newsletter but there is a whole lot going on with the orchestra right now!  Please see the topic headings for details.

Orchestra Uniforms (Tuxedos)

If you have not been fitted, the Tuxedo Wearhouse will be in class this Wednesday, August 24. If you have already been measured you should register and pay Tuxedo Wearhouse directly via their website. All of the information you will need is on the website.

Orchestra Uniforms (Dresses)

Ms. Barket will be on campus this Wednesday, August to fit women for dresses (if you have not been fitted). Dresses are $75 and checks should be made payable to AHSOA. Deadline for paying for your dress is Friday, September 2. A $10 late fee (for rush order/shipping) will be added to orders after this date.

Fall Concert!!

Our fall concert is FAST approaching!  Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 29 at 7 PM.  Students should plan on arriving between 5:45 PM and 6:00 PM.  Note: There will be no after school rehearsals on concert day.

Student Participation Fee

The Student Participation Fee (SPF) is $120. Because the orchestra does not receive enough funding to cover costs, the orchestra must implement an SPF. This “fair share” fee covers the cost of LGPE entrance fees, busses, materials, supplies, music, and more. Each student will receive an orchestra t-shirt (required for non-formal performances), and the new “Habits of a Successful String Musician” method book. AHSOA would like all SPF’s turned in by Friday, August 26. Please contact Dr. Laux if you would need to make special payment arrangements.

Domino’s Pizza Card Fundraiser

Last Wednesday, the orchestra started its first fundraiser of the year. We are selling Domino’s Pizza Cards. The goal for each student is to sell 12 cards. The cards are $10.00 each and will guarantee the holder with unlimited buy one get one free pizzas at Domino’s. The cards pay for themselves after one use.

Orders are due next Wednesday, August 31. IMPORTANT: The AHSOA asks that parents please write ONE CHECK for the entire pizza card order. The check should be made payable to AHSOA.

Tanner Photography Photo Shoot

Our second fundraiser of the year will contain zero calories! The AHSOA is excited to be partnering with Tanner Photography this fall for the AHSOA Family Portrait Event! Please join us for a family portrait session with your family at Mill Creek Pond (30000 Mill Creek Ave. Alpharetta, GA 30005)

  • Saturday, October 15th from 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Sunday, October 16th from 10:00am – 2:00pm

You will receive a sitting time and one 11 x 14 portrait of your family for only $25! ($120 Value Courtesy of Tanner Photography). Time slots/orders are pre-paid online and all proceeds go to the Alpharetta High School Orchestra.

Bring your whole family! Bring your pets! Great for Holiday cards! Please also feel free to share with your friends, family and neighbors so they can support us and take advantage of this phenomenal offer!

Making Payments

All payments should be dropped in the lock box in the back of the orchestra classroom. Please put your payment in an envelope with the following information. 1. Name 2. Class Period/Orchestra 3. Amount 4. What the money is for (i.e. Domino’s cards, uniform, SPF, etc.) Ms. O’Meara will pick up payments from the lock box daily.

Writing Checks

Please make all checks payable to AHSOA. (This is short for the Alpharetta High School Orchestra Association). Checks should not be made payable to AHS unless specifically told to do so.

Fulton County Youth Orchestra Needs Volunteers

FCYO auditions will be this Tuesday, August 23 and they have  a record number of students coming in for the auditions (over 70 at last count!).
In the past, a lot of AHS orchestra students would help with the FCYO rehearsals and auditions.  It is a good way for students to accumulate the volunteer hours.  They could REALLY use some students for these auditions to help with tuning, registration and crowd control since they have so many students auditioning.

They are looking for about 6 students who can stay from 4-7 PM to help this Tuesday, August 23.  Please use the sign-up genius form to volunteer. http://www.SignUpGenius.com/go/4090F48A5A923A6FF2-fcyo

All-State Orchestra

Students planning to audition for All-State Orchestra should pre-register with Dr. Laux using this form by September 2, 2016.  The audition fee is $20.00.  Please make your check payable to AHSOA and submit by Sept. 2.

A list of All-State Audition materials can be found here.

All-State Orchestra weekend is March 3-4, 2017.

Orchestra Potluck is coming!

The annual AHS Orchestra Potluck Dinner is next Wednesday, August 17 at 6:30 PM in the AHS Cafeteria.  This event serves as a social gathering for students and parents that will help bring together our orchestra community. In addition, the dinner will serve as a membership meeting for the Alpharetta High School Orchestra Association.  The AHSOA board members will present some important information for the upcoming year. Items of discussion will be the orchestra budget, fundraisers, supplies, uniforms, volunteering, and more.

Every student and at least one parent are expected to attend, but families are welcome.  It will be a grand night of food, so bring your appetites!

The food assignments will be determined by the student’s primary instrument and are as follows:

  • Violin & Cello Players – Favorite Main Dish

Mini-Camp Wrap Up and the New School Year

Dear Parents and Students,

What a successful Mini-Camp!  It was great getting to know the students and watching students also mix it up.  The games were fun and so was sight-reading!

I would like to thank the parents who helped with the food.  Everyone enjoyed the pizza on Wednesday. The warm cookies donated by Tiff’s Treats on Thursday were also a welcome surprise. (Please visit their website here!) Finally, the ice cream social provided my Ms. Johnson was a wonderful way to finish things off!

Special thanks to the student leadership team for their work in putting managing the stage, handling the music, and coordinating the games. It could not have happened without your help!

mini-camp_pano2016

For our first day of school tomorrow, please DO NOT bring your instruments.  We will be assigning lockers, discussing procedures, and going through the orchestra handbook. The handbook will be posted online shortly. We will start with instruments on Tuesday.

I’m so excited about this year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Laux
