String/Orchestra Music Education @ Kennesaw State University

If you are a string player and are interested in an undergraduate degree in music performance or music education, you should consider Kennesaw State University!! KSU is one of the top universities in Georgia with nearly 35,000 students and a rapidly growing school of music.  I am proud to be the first string music education professor at KSU and bring over 15 years of public school teaching experience to give students practical, real-world teaching strategies and pedagogy for the 21st century. My goal is to continue to build the string education program by recruiting the best string students. I hope that you can be a part of it!

Specialized courses in String Education at KSU

  • MUED 3351 – String Techniques
  • MUED 3372 – Guitar/Violin Techniques
  • MUED 3303 – String Methods, Materials, and Curriculum
  • MUED 3305 – Educational String Literature & Technology Integration
  • MUED 4000 – Advanced String Instrument Pedagogy & Arranging

In addition to the courses in music education, KSU has a rapidly growing string department and orchestra program.  Most string education majors are involved with the KSU String Project, a community-university partnership that offers affordable group string instruction to over 110 elementary age string players each week.  String education majors serve as teachers, teacher assistants, sectional coaches, and more.  This opportunity provides valuable hands-on teaching experience prior to student teaching.

Music majors may participate in the KSU Symphony Orchestra or the KSU Philharmonic Orchestra.  Both orchestras have both music majors and non-music majors participating.  The Philharmonic has no audition requirement and is open to any students with previous playing experience.

Our applied string studio faculty are top notch, professional performers and teachers!  Read more about them here.

  • Helen Kim, violin
  • Catherine Lynn and Paul Murphy, viola
  • Charae Krueger, cello
  • James Barkett, double bass

The KSU campus is set in suburban Kennesaw in Cobb County, Georgia.  The campus has award winning dining facilities, a modern campus close to shopping, dining, and cultural activities. While the campus is large, KSU continues to retain a small school community atmosphere.
